And according to research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carolinecastrillon\/2021\/10\/17\/why-companies-should-consider-a-four-day-workweek\/\">people want 4-day work weeks<\/a>. They want flexibility. 9 of 10 respondents in one US study said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/simpletexting.com\/four-day-work-week\/\">5-day work week is outdated<\/a>. The founder of the not-for-profit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.4dayweek.com\/\">4 Day Week Global<\/a> said that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/01\/thousands-of-employees-are-testing-a-4-day-workweek-starting-today.html\">it\u2019s inevitable we\u2019ll see bigger companies doing this<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you jump to conclusions and wonder, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t I think of that?!\u201d or throw together a hasty strategy to follow suit, let\u2019s take a look at the benefits to both employees and companies and the potential challenges that need to be addressed in order for a rollout of this scale to actually work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-exactly-is-a-four-day-work-week\"><strong>What <\/strong><strong><em>Exactly<\/em><\/strong><strong> Is A Four-Day Work Week?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/Documents\/SHRM%20Employee%20Benefits%202019%20Leave%20and%20Flexible%20Working.pdf\">According to HR studies on employee benefits<\/a>, there are two types of 4-day work weeks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>4-day work weeks of 40 hours<\/strong><br>In this scenario, employees are still required to clock a full 40-hour work week, but they\u2019re given more schedule flexibility of how and when they want to do it. For instance, employees could work four 10-hour days and have a three-day weekend, if they wanted to. Currently, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/Documents\/SHRM%20Employee%20Benefits%202019%20Leave%20and%20Flexible%20Working.pdf\">32% of US employers follow this work schedule<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>4-day work weeks of 32 hours or less<\/strong><br>Rather than maintaining full-time hours, some companies are opting to reduce the number of operating hours to 32 or less over four days. Approximately 15% of US employers currently follow this model, although it is quickly gaining popularity among top employers.&nbsp;For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.4dayweek.com\/\">4 Day Week Global<\/a> uses a 100-80-100 model. Let\u2019s look at the pros and cons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Benefits Of A 4-Day Work Week&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For employees, the benefits are more obvious. Since the pandemic and WFH phenomena, they want flexibility with their work schedule to have a more balanced and healthier work-life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees can use this free time however they want. They can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>run errands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spend time with friends and family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unwind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>workout<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>go to appointments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>go on vacation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the purpose of a 4-day work week is to help employees improve their mental health and wellness and avoid burnout, quitting, disengaging, or taking leaves of absence, then this could be one solution. Depending, of course, on if and how employees use their time off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2021\/07\/06\/iceland-worker-study-four-day-work-week-productivity\/7871364002\/\">According to a four-year study conducted in Iceland<\/a> of 2,500 employees with 35-36 hour work weeks, \u201cworker well-being dramatically increased across a range of indicators, from perceived stress and burnout to health and work-life balance.\u201d Productivity stayed the same or better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/images.golinks.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/02094130\/work-life-balance-1024x315.png\" alt=\"a seesaw with the words work and life balanced on either end\" class=\"wp-image-2388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.golinks.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/02094130\/work-life-balance-1024x315.png 1024w, https:\/\/images.golinks.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/02094130\/work-life-balance-300x92.png 300w, https:\/\/images.golinks.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/02094130\/work-life-balance-768x236.png 768w, https:\/\/images.golinks.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/02094130\/work-life-balance-40x12.png 40w, https:\/\/images.golinks.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/02094130\/work-life-balance.png 1340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For companies, the benefits run the gamut from helping to attract and retain top talent and having competitive (and trendy) work perks to reducing operational overhead and increasing employee productivity and well-being. Or so that\u2019s the idea. It\u2019s also why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3659870\/california-legislators-put-four-day-workweek-proposal-on-hold.html\">California considered passing a bill to reduce typical work weeks<\/a> from 40 to 32 hours. And why countless trials at companies like Kickstarter, Unilever, Shake Shack, and Microsoft Japan around the world are kicking off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carolinecastrillon\/2021\/10\/17\/why-companies-should-consider-a-four-day-workweek\/?sh=7538b4c83b45\">As Kickstarter CEO Aziz Hasan explained to Forbes<\/a>, \u201cKickstarter has a history of thoughtfully approaching the way we design our workplace. As we build a future that is flexible, we see testing a four-day work week as a continuation of that spirit and intention.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Challenges Of A 4-Day Work Week&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let\u2019s talk about this \u201cday off.\u201d Is it, in fact, a day off for the employee? Or is it a \u201cgrey zone\u201d kind of day where managers still expect you to be online and available? If so, how is this different from a remote workday? What about if your employees didn\u2019t get all of their work done because they were expected to perform at the same output and level of productivity, despite less time?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pro tip: <\/strong>Set boundaries, specific rules, and clear guidelines about accessibility and availability on your employee\u2019s flux days so that there are no discrepancies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, if burnout and stress are at an all-time high for employees, will having one less day to get the same amount of work done only <em>add<\/em> to the problem? How are employees expected to \u201cwork smarter, not harder\u201d if they\u2019re already burnt out? Will this not lead to more disengaged employees?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#091f32;font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><blockquote><p>Shorter work weeks show a higher percentage of disengaged employees.<\/p><cite>Gallup research<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/354596\/4-day-work-week-good-idea.aspx\">Gallup\u2019s research found<\/a> that \u201cwhile the percentage of engaged workers was similar across the three work week conditions [that is, 4-day, 5-day, and 6-day work weeks], the percentage of actively disengaged workers was highest for those with four-day and six-day work weeks.\u201d They concluded that the relationship between time, work, well-being, and employee engagement was complex\u2014and couldn\u2019t necessarily be solved by a one-size-fits-all approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Employers should focus on improving the overall work experience for their employees <em>before<\/em> they consider switching to a 4-day work week.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The last challenge is equally as complex and takes some careful planning to do it right. That is the rollout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maximize Efficiency And Streamline Operations In A 4-Day Work Week<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.airbnb.com\/airbnbs-design-to-live-and-work-anywhere\/\">In an open letter to Airbnb employees<\/a>, co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky explained his new global policy for employees to live and work anywhere. In it, he wrote, \u201cTo pull off this level of flexibility, we need ample structure and coordination. Make them clearly understood by all participating parties. Then, empower managers and teams with processes and tools that help them do their jobs, ie. to work smarter and not harder.
